3 volley drills for control and improvement

The right volley drills should help you feel contact, direction and a stable rhythm.

The main goal in volley is to play cleaner at the net and finish simple points correctly. To get there, you need step forward, a stable racket head and a short contact point in front.

  • Start with: short-court volley to volley
  • Continue with: approach and first volley
  • Finish the session with: alternating forehand and backhand volley sequences

The most common mistake is making a big swing on the volley and losing control at contact. If you fix it early, progress comes faster and with less strain on the body.

For match use, remember this: send your body through the target and prioritize direction over power. Work on a few drills consistently and measure your progress from week to week.

A simple weekly routine is: 8 minutes of touch volleys, 10 minutes of approach patterns and 10 minutes of doubles reactions. Keep notes on contact quality, errors and decision making.
