Basics of volley for beginner tennis players

The basics of volley do not need rush; they need clean repetition and the right body position.

The main goal in volley is to play cleaner at the net and finish simple points correctly. To get there, you need step forward, a stable racket head and a short contact point in front.

  • Start with: short-court volley to volley
  • Continue with: approach and first volley
  • Finish the session with: alternating forehand and backhand volley sequences

The most common mistake is making a big swing on the volley and losing control at contact. If you fix it early, progress comes faster and with less strain on the body.

For match use, remember this: send your body through the target and prioritize direction over power. Your goal is to make volley simple, repeatable and reliable from the first ball.

A simple weekly routine is: 8 minutes of touch volleys, 10 minutes of approach patterns and 10 minutes of doubles reactions. Keep notes on contact quality, errors and decision making.
