Weekly serve return practice plan for steady progress

Progress in serve return comes faster when you follow a small, clear and repeatable plan.

The main goal in serve return is to start the point neutrally or aggressively against different serves. To get there, you need low ready position, compact movement and contact in front without a big backswing.

  • Start with: split step with a visual cue
  • Continue with: blocked return down the line
  • Finish the session with: crosscourt return with a safety target

The most common mistake is taking a big swing and losing time against a fast serve. If you fix it early, progress comes faster and with less strain on the body.

For match use, remember this: aim for depth through the middle first and then attack weaker second serves. Keep notes, work with simple indicators and do not change goals every session.

A simple weekly routine is: 8 minutes of split-step work, 12 minutes of compact returns and 10 minutes attacking second serves. Keep notes on contact quality, errors and decision making.
