5 slice mistakes and how to fix them

Most slice mistakes start from poor preparation, not from a lack of power.

The main goal in slice is to use the slice for defense, change of pace and a low trajectory. To get there, you need a high start, smooth racket descent and a steady body in balance.

  • Start with: low crosscourt slice
  • Continue with: slice approach with forward momentum
  • Finish the session with: defensive slice from a deep position

The most common mistake is chopping too sharply without length or directional control. If you fix it early, progress comes faster and with less strain on the body.

For match use, remember this: use the slice when you want to break the opponent’s rhythm or buy time. Fix your position, rhythm and contact first, then ask for more speed.

A simple weekly routine is: 10 minutes of movement mechanics, 10 minutes of depth work and 10 minutes of transition slice drills. Keep notes on contact quality, errors and decision making.
